Import .vsd and .vss files in draw.io Desktop

draw.io Desktop converts older Microsoft Visio files on your device. Your Visio file is not uploaded.

From version 31.7.0 onwards, you can drag and drop these Visio files onto the drawing canvas in draw.io Desktop:

  • .vsd drawings
  • .vst templates
  • .vss stencils

Open a .vsd file

  1. Open a new blank diagram in draw.io Desktop.
  2. Drag the .vsd file from your file manager and drop it onto the drawing canvas.

The Visio drawing will be converted and opened as a new diagram. Select File > Save to save it as a .drawio file.

Tip: To add a Visio drawing to an existing diagram, drop the .vsd file onto a drawing canvas that already contains shapes. The imported shapes will be selected, so you can drag them into position.

Note: You can't open .vsd, .vst or .vss files with File > Open or File > Import in draw.io Desktop, or by double-clicking them. Drag and drop the file onto the drawing canvas instead.

Add a .vss stencil library

  1. Drag the .vss file from your file manager and drop it onto the drawing canvas.

The Visio stencils will be converted and added as a custom shape library in the shapes panel.

Import .vdx and .vsx files

draw.io can't import Visio 2003-2010 XML files (.vdx drawings and .vsx stencils). Convert them in Microsoft Visio first.

  1. Open the file in Microsoft Visio 2013 or later.
  2. Save the drawing as a .vsdx file, or the stencil as a .vssx file.
  3. Drag the new file from your file manager and drop it onto the drawing canvas in draw.io Desktop.
