Import a .vss stencil library to draw.io

draw.io converts Microsoft Visio stencil files (.vss) to a custom shape library, so you can use your Visio stencils in your draw.io diagrams. The conversion runs in your browser. Your stencil file is not uploaded.

Open a .vss stencil file​

  1. Drag the .vss file from your file manager and drop it onto the drawing canvas. Alternatively, select File > Open from > Device, then select the .vss file.

The Visio stencils will be converted and added as a custom shape library in the shapes panel.

Note: File > Open Library from > Device doesn't accept .vss files. Drag and drop the file, or use File > Open from > Device instead.

Note: In draw.io Desktop, drag and drop the .vss file onto the drawing canvas. File > Open doesn't accept .vss files in draw.io Desktop.

Import a .vsx stencil file​

draw.io can't import Visio 2003-2010 XML stencils (.vsx). Convert them in Microsoft Visio first.

  1. Open the stencil in Microsoft Visio 2013 or later.
  2. Save the stencil as a .vssx file.
  3. Drag the .vssx file from your file manager and drop it onto the drawing canvas in draw.io.
